A project manager for an elevator company recently asked me what drone one should use for the highest accuracy to measure steel beams on a construction sight as it would save a lot of time and money from sending a person up there to measure it themselves. My understanding is that the elevator company wants to make sure that the parts they are going to install for the elevator shaft are the right size, so they want to make sure they have the absolute precise measurements for the steel beams and frames that have already been constructed so as not to insert a part that is either too long or too short -- even by 1 inch. He was thinking it would be safer and quicker to have a drone go up to take measurements instead of a person.
Is this possible? If so, how would one go about doing this -- and what drone would work for this kind of a project? Does it have to use LiDAR or can Photogrammetry work? Would it have to scan the entire building to make measurements, or could it just take pictures of certain parts? And how accurate would it be?
