Gimbal mounting plate levers at back (setting ?)

There are two small levers at the back of the gimbal mounting plate that don't appear connected to anything. What is the purpose and which setting of the two is yours in?

They are not used on the X5 ( but they will be on the X5R)

I have the X5 gimbal mount on my Inspire 1 using an X3 gimbal. I can not find a use for clips either. Maybe I should take them off to save some weight as I will never own a X5R
